The Director of Graduate Studies is available to discuss any aspect of your graduate studies and career plans with you, and to assist with grant writing, CV creation, job applications, etc. Please drop in during any office hour, or send an email to the director for an appointment.

Students are urged to take advantage of the facilities of the
UCLA Graduate Writing Center
, and to take note of the many workshops the Center and Library offer on a variety of professional topics.

Monday 24 November 2008, 1pm, Gamelan Room, "Teaching Ethnomusicology in the Liberal Arts College Environment." Presentation by Gina Fatone (Ph.D. '02) who is currently a tenure-track assistant professor at Bates College in Maine. She will discuss how to position oneself as a job candidate for a liberal arts college
post, and how to build one's career once hired.

2006-07 Workshops

   
 

During academic year 2006-7 academic year, Professor Rees organized the SEM paper practice read-though and three workshops, to which all ethnomusicology graduate students were welcome:

Friday 1 June, 2007, 4-5pm, Near East Room: "Books, articles, essays, etc.: different types of publications, and what to be aware of when leaping into print." This workshop was followed by a session explaining the planning and mechanics of the doctoral exam process, with Sandra McKerroll (staff graduate advisor) and Megan Rancier (who had just completed the process).

Friday 11 May, 2007, 5-6pm, Gamelan Room: "How to get your first academic job" (with Tanya Merchant)

Wednesday 24 January, 2007, 12 noon-1pm, Green Room:
"Dissertations without fear: how to write up promptly and painlessly" (with Tim Rice and Tanya Merchant)
